Ohio Diocese Lists Rules For Priests Interaction With Kids

In light of many recent priest abuse scandals, each diocese across the country has been forced to look hard at how priests interact with children. One diocese in the Buckeye State is laying down ground rules with a new list of dos and don'ts.

Is it right for a priest to hug your child? How about giving them a high-five, or even a piggy back ride?

"I teach elementary school, and we also have to be very aware about how you touch kids and I guess it's just gotten to the priests too," said Ohio Valley resident Sandy Wiseman.

The Archdiocese of Cincinnati is laying out rules for interaction between priests and kids with their latest list of dos and don’ts -- saying a simple handshake, pat on the back, or high-five is OK. A hug is fine too as long as it's shoulder to shoulder.

But the archdiocese said a priest should never give a child a kiss. They shouldn't tickle, wrestle with them or give bear hugs. There should be no lap-sitting or piggy back rides.

"I do think it's a good thing -- to protect the priests as well as the children, so there can't be any accusations," said Wiseman.

"I think they should be allowed to hug them or give them an embrace of some kind," said William Biggs, Jr., of Cameron.

Victim advocates said they support these new lists as a step toward better protecting children, but some local folks said the lists are a shame.

"I think it's awfully sad that our society's come to a point where we worry about a man of the cloth giving a child a piggy back ride. If we've gotten to that point, I think we've really lost something in society," said Ohio Valley resident Bob Wiseman.

The Archdiocese of Cincinnati updates their rules every five years. This latest version also mandates background checks for contractors who work with children.
