Wild Chickens Running Free In Weirton

Posted: 10:04 pm EDT August 14, 2008Updated: 12:46 am EDT August 15, 2008

It's a pretty fowl situation in a residential section of Weirton, where dozens of wild chickens are roaming the streets in the Kings Creek area.

Neighbors said they've been squawking to city leaders for months to try to chase them out -- and NEWS9 has learned help may soon be on the way.

It's not a farm -- it's Wall Street in the Kings Creek section of Weirton.

"It's horrible. At 4 o’clock in the morning it sounds like the funny farm," said Wall Street resident Christina Foley.

Foley moved there about a year and a half ago and has been dealing with dozens of wild chickens flocking and running free in her neighborhood.

"They wake up my babies, wake me up. They’re dirty and disgusting. They're everywhere," said Foley.

The chickens roam the streets and hide in trees.

"They're coming in our yard; they go everywhere. It's ridiculous," said Foley.

Foley said she's been calling members of Weirton City Council for months trying to get some help.

NEWS9 found out council is on it -- saying it’s both a health and safety concern.

"They carry diseases. They can harm the children," said Foley.

Weirton City Council is looking to hire a federal agency to come in and remove all of the chickens -- something Foley said can't come soon enough.

"I want to see the chickens gone," said Foley.

Councilman Ronnie Jones told NEWS9 council will vote next week on a contract with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to remove the wild chickens.

They will come up with a plan that could include netting, live trapping or sharp shooting to get rid of the chickens.

It's expected to cost just under $4,000.
