Shadyside High School Offers Grief Counselors After Student's Death

Monday, August 18, 2008 – updated: 4:48 pm EDT August 20, 2008

As a community mourns a teen who died after a motorcycle crash, the school where she attended is preparing to counsel grieving students.

Devron Lunsford, 16, was a Shadyside High School student. She died Saturday, weeks after she was involved in a motorcycle crash.

Superintendent Terry Brinker said Lunsford was a popular student and a terrific basketball player for the Lady Tigers.

"It's going to be a challenge for all of us," Brinker said. "It's a little school. We know them personally. We know them well and we are all struggling with this.

He said with the help of student services, guidance counselors and school staff, the school will be prepared to help grieving students when school starts next week.

Brinker said staff will utilize all available resources and make themselves available to students inside and outside of the classroom.

"It can be some one-on-one, small group sessions that will be going on, even working with clergy in the community for group one-on-one," he said.

Visitation for Lunsford is scheduled for Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bauchnect-Altmyer Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
