Weirton Council Votes In Favor Of Getting Rid Of Chickens

Tuesday, August 19, 2008 – updated: 4:13 pm EDT August 19, 2008

Chickens are still clucking in the City of Weirton, but the City Council hopes to make the streets in the Kings Creek area flock-free soon.

The Weirton City Council met Tuesday and voted in favor of paying the Department of Agriculture nearly $4,000 to get rid of the chickens for good.

The Department of Agriculture is performing a study to see whether it can solve the poultry problem.

Police Chief Bruce Marshall said the birds will be dealt with in a humane manner, but some listed methods to remove the chickens include netting, live trapping and sharp-shooting.

The city’s work plan said the birds captured will be either buried or burned.
