Crews Across Valley Battle Three Fires

Fire crews on Tuesday battled an arson in Hancock County, a historic building blaze in Richmond and a house fire in Mingo Junction.In Hancock County, officials said arson was the cause of a blaze that destroyed two abandoned homes in New Cumberland.The fire started early Tuesday at a South Cumberland Street and quickly spread to a neighboring house. There were no reported injuries and no suspects had been named as of 4:15 p.m.In Richmond, a historic building was damaged after a fire started on a back porch and quickly spread.The cause of the fire at the Old Richmond Hotel was not immediately known.Officials said the building is owned by the Kinney family and was being used as apartments. Everyone made it out safely, including pets."I didn't expect this when I woke up this morning, but I hope I have a place to sleep tonight," said Mildred Kinney, who lives in the building.Richmond Fire Department Chief Ed Cooley said crews cut holes in the ceiling to get to the flames. He said the building also suffered water damage.A fire marshal is investigating.Crews in Mingo Junction were called out twice when a home was destroyed by flames around noon.The fire on Locust Avenue may have been electrical in nature and possibly started from a heating pad, officials said.An elderly woman who lived in the home was not injured, but her dog did not survive.Crews quickly contained the fire, but the flames rekindled hours later around 3:30 p.m.State fire marshal officials are investigating the arson in New Cumberland and the Richmond fire.
