POWHATAN POINT, Ohio -- Students at Powhatan Elementary School are back to school next week. While students have their school supplies ready, one thing they do not have is air conditioning inside their classroom."Very little can be done when students are hot, you just can't think," said Pattie Meyer. For Pattie Meyer, she said the sweltering heat inside her third grade classroom is a lot for students. Now she's asking lawmakers to feel her pain, literally. She said she is asking Governor Ted Strickland and other elected officials to turn off their air conditioners once school starts."Asking the governor’s office and the legislature if they would turn off their office air conditioning, so maybe they can empathize a little bit with us," said Meyer. She said the heat takes a toll, making it hard for students to concentrate."The physical needs have to be met before any learning can take place and they are drenched, really gasping for air by the end of the day," said Meyer. And with the strict state standards in place for teachers, she feels students could be at a loss compared to other schools."We have all these requirements now with having to meet state standards and we are at a disadvantage compared to other schools," she said. And while the heat is not long term, she along with other parents feels if students have to deal with it, the state can too."Everybody knows the problem, parents are aware of it, we have very little money, what can we do, something needs to be addressed," she said.
