Pennsylvania State police had to shut down the westbound lanes of U.S. 22 in Hanover Township Tuesday after an SUV carrying members of the Franciscan University cross-country team crashed, killing one of the passengers.NEWS9 has learned the six other passengers in the SUV were not seriously injured, but investigators said sophomore Kelly Roggensack didn't have a chance and died instantly on impact."I believe the vehicle rolled. I'm not sure how many times, but the young lady died instantly," said Washington County Coroner Tim Warco.Investigators said Roggensack was belted in, in the front passenger seat of the white SUV, when it rolled off the side of Route 22."It's at least 20 feet down in a ravine that's heavily wooded. So you can't even see it from the road," said Robin Mungo, of the Pennsylvania State police. The Franciscan University students were on their way back to Steubenville from cross-country practice out in Imperial, Pa."That's where they were on the way to. Unfortunately [it’s], very sad. I don't know her age, but she's young," said Warco.A priest and a friar were the only people allowed near the SUV besides investigators. They were there to identify Roggensack and offer prayers. Two men and four women were in the car with Roggensack. Two were airlifted to Pittsburgh and the other four were taken by ground to Weirton Medical Center.According to the coroner, witnesses said the SUV wasn't speeding, and it's a possibility the driver swerved to avoid a chunk of tire re-tread in the road when they rolled."It's too early to determine. We do have an accident re-constructionist who is out here to reconstruct the crash to make a better determination. Also we need to go out to the hospitals to interview the individuals that were inside the vehicle," said Mungo.Pennsylvania state police are expected to release more information Wednesday about the results of their investigation.Students gathered Tuesday night at the Christ the King Chapel on campus in prayer.Tom Sofio, a spokesman for the University said Roggensack and her teammates had just started their cross-country practices on Monday."Kelly was a sophomore, she was on the cross country team last year, she was eager to return early to start practice this year," said Sofio. He said Roggensack's family had just moved to Tennessee from the west coast, so he said she called the university her home."This is her family, this is her home, this is her community," said Sofio. And on Tuesday night that community felt that loss."It's total shock and for students who are so rooted in prayer you have faith. That faith carry's you through, but that doesn't mean you don't feel that human emotion of shock," said Sofio.
