Charges Mounting Against Former Coroner's Investigator

Posted: 11:23 am EDT August 21, 2008Updated: 2:05 pm EDT August 21, 2008

Charges are mounting against former Jefferson County coroner’s investigator David Workman.

Workman is accused of stealing a credit card from the morgue and charging hundreds of dollars at a Weirton strip club in Joseph Verstraten’s name.

Police said Workman was arrested Wednesday night in Steubenville for soliciting prostitution.

Workman already has felony charges against him on both sides of the river, theft in office in Jefferson County, Ohio and fraudulent use of a credit card in Weirton, W.Va.

Workman appeared in Hancock County Court Thursday and NEWS9 asked him about his arrest in Steubenville Wednesday night. Workman did not respond but Steubenville police are speaking up about what happened.

Police said 52-year-old Workman was one of 15 arrested in a prostitution bust, soliciting prostitution from an undercover female police officer who was wired.

Workman was in court Thursday for a preliminary hearing, accused of using Verstraten’s credit card at a strip club. Verstraten died in a fatal crash in June. Verstraten’s wife was in court today and said she’s hurting but will be present at every hearing, standing up for her husband.

Workman waived his preliminary hearing in Hancock County. The case now moves to circuit court.

Workman is still free on bond on the Weirton charges. Hancock County prosecutor Jim David said he did not revoke bond because he waived Thursday’s preliminary hearing.

No word on when Workman will be back in court in Hancock County but he is set for trial in Jefferson County next Tuesday.
