4-Year-Old Sickened From Eating Too Much Chewable Aspirin

Friday, August 22, 2008 – updated: 6:42 pm EDT August 22, 2008

Emergency officials are reminding parents to keep medications out of the reach of children after a 4-year-old was sickened from ingesting too much chewable aspirin.

Belmont County emergency workers said they rushed to a home on county Road 214 around 9 a.m. Friday after receiving a call that the child was possibly poisoned.

Neffs firefighters said they boy is OK now, but said it serves as a reminder for parents and guardians to keep children safe.

Fire Chief John Driscoll said his department has had several calls of children who were sickened from ingesting medication.

Linda Mehl, director of nursing at the Belmont County Health Department, said all pills -- not just prescription medication -- must be kept away from children.

"Kids just have a talent and a way to get into everything and you don't even realize it happened. It may be way after the fact when you find out," Mehl said. "Any medication can be dangerous."

She said anyone who needs more information should contact Poison Control, their family doctor or the Heath Department.
