Wheeling Plans Port Events For Fall, Winter

Wednesday, September 3, 2008 – updated: 2:50 am EDT September 4, 2008

City employees said the more attendance and attention each event at Heritage Port receives, the more groups come forward interested in hosting other events. Joelle Ennis from the city’s marketing department said there's interest in filling up weekends coming up in the fall and winter this year.

"September, even though summer's kind of winding down, we still have a full calendar of events throughout September," said Ennis.

Many events at Heritage Port had an impressive turnout this summer, according to city employees. Now they're looking to keep the momentum going, as the temperatures start dropping.

"We're working on Halloween themed events. So we're thinking of maybe a pumpkin patch or maybe a haunted trail ride or something."

The details are still in the works, just as they are for many other possible upcoming events. Ennis said the city is working on new events, with interest from non-profit organizations.

She said they're also working to build up existing events -- like Wheeling's Fantasy in Lights parade.

"We'd love to have something down here sort of around that time, whether it's around that time or maybe the weekend after. Some sort of maybe Heritage Port light up night," she said.

Ennis said the port’s location near several major roadways makes it an attractive site for groups hosting events. The next event at Heritage Port is the Wine and Jazz festival this Saturday.
