Marshall County Officials Address School Bus Crowding Concerns

Wednesday, September 3, 2008 – updated: 2:46 am EDT September 4, 2008

Transportation officials in Marshall County are addressing school bus capacities after parents said crowding is putting their children in danger.

Some parents said, since the first day of school, their children have been complaining they've had to sit in the aisles of the bus or sit four to a seat.

The parents said the situation has improved some in the past week or so, but want to know why it was ever a problem at all.

School officials acknowledged there were some issues.

"We've had some overload situations here. We've worked through those somewhat, (but) we're not completely through yet," said Beth Bertram, Marshall County Schools transportation director.

Bertram said there have been many bus schedule changes since the county changed which schools hold certain grade levels. She said problems also arise when students have different bus stops in the morning and afternoon.

"We've worked right along to alleviate the problem," Bertram said. "Some of the concerns I've heard from parents -- when I checked the buses personally -- it wasn't as bad as they thought it was."

Bertram said the school district would never put students in danger and said they hope to have any remaining bus issues worked out by week's end.
