A Cambridge man is in police custody on suspicion of robbing a local Kmart store and leading officers on a high-speed chase.

Martin Kiggans was arrested at gunpoint Friday morning in Warwood. Police said the incident started in St. Clairsville, where they said Kiggans used a gun to rob the K-Mart before fleeing the scene by vehicle.

Kiggans allegedly led police on a chase from Belmont County to Warwood, speeding through residential neighborhoods on the way.

Wheeling police said they picked up the chase just as the robbery suspect crossed over the Ft. Henry Bridge from Ohio to West Virginia at about around 9:15 a.m.

Officers were already at the Main Street exit downtown on another call, and said they saw Kiggans make a U-turn the wrong way onto Main Street and head into North Wheeling.

Police said Kiggans continued to lead them through Warwood until the suspect saw that police had placed spikes in the road. At that time, officers said, Kiggans surrendered.

Kiggans is being held in West Virginia on a fugitive from justice charge and police said he will also face armed robbery charges in Ohio.
