DOH: Tile Work Finished; Tunnel Project 75 Percent Complete

Posted: 5:20 pm EDT September 19, 2008Updated: 7:20 pm EDT September 19, 2008

After months of detours and driver headaches, the West Virginia Division of Highways is assuring drivers that the end of the eastbound tunnel project is near.

A progress update from the DOH office in Charleston states the tile work is 100 percent finished.

The eastbound tunnel is still closed to traffic, but the announcement is a milestone in the project that was set by months because of tile problems.

Despite the work that’s visibly been completed inside the tunnel, some drivers are still wondering whether the project will be finished on time --by Nov. 1 -- and done right.

"It’s been two years [since the project started], so I guess we just kind of wait and see. There's not much else we can do about that," said Bryan Whittaker of Dillonvale.

For many people NEWS9 broke the news to, it brought up more questions than answers.

"I'm just saying, I’m really not impressed, because it's way behind schedule now. You know I’m kind of leery about what does 75 percent mean?"

DOH officials said 75 percent means the project is still on track to finish by Nov. 1. Officials said electrical work inside is nearly half finished, and during the next few weeks, crews will tackle paving, painting and drainage work.

After a brief break, nighttime work on the westbound tube will start back up again on Monday. Crews will close the tunnel at 8 p.m. Monday until 6:30 a.m. Tuesday. Tuesday night, the westbound side will close at 9 p.m. nightly.
