Four Dogs Found Dead In Creek; Humane Officers Investigating

Tuesday, September 23, 2008 – updated: 12:10 am EDT September 24, 2008

Humane officers are investigating after four dead dogs were found in a creek, one shot and another with a rope tied around its neck.

The body of the first dog -- a 2-year-old shepherd mix named Konan -- was found near Dillonvale by children who were fishing. Later, the three other bodies were found in the same area under County Road.

Joanne Calfa, of the Jefferson County Humane Society, said it appears that one of the dogs had a rope double-knotted around its neck and may have been thrown over a bridge.

"This is (a) needless act of cruelty. We do have a lead. We're pursuing so the persons involved will get the maximum," Calfa said.

According to Calfa, Konan and another dog from the same home in Dillonvale broke free from their property last week. On Monday, an anonymous tip led police to the three other dogs.

The owners of the four dogs said their animals used to play in the same creek.

The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to immediately call police.
