With Gas Below $3.00, Will We Return To 'Gas-Guzzling?'

Valley Drivers Queue Up For Cheaper Fuel

Saturday, October 11, 2008 – updated: 5:50 pm EDT October 11, 2008

As gasoline prices continue to fall, will Americans return to their gas-guzzling ways?

Experts say that's unlikely because most drivers assume the dip in prices will be short-lived, and motorists have adjusted their habits accordingly, by either continuing to drive less or by switching to more fuel-efficient cars.

NEWS9 cameras joined the crowd at the Steubenville BP where the price signs rolled below the $3.00 mark Saturday.

Local drivers aren't sure it will last.

"The gas, I don't know," said Frank Notni of Weirton. "It's up and down like a yo-yo."

"I bought a car that can get 40 miles per gallon," said Judy Lofhom of Burgettstown, Pa.

After almost eight years of continuously rising gas prices, "any notion that this is a temporary thing has pretty well been erased," said AAA spokesman Geoff Sundstrom.

The question is no longer when gas prices will fall, but when will the next spike come.

Nevertheless, new technologies are emerging fast, with electric cars expected to hit the market in a couple years.

And even automakers that have long relied on big trucks for profits are moving in a new direction.

They're focusing more on cars.

Demand for gasoline has dropped 6 percent over a couple months.
