Steubenville Detectives Frustrated Over Prisoners' Release

Posted: 11:57 am EST November 6, 2008Updated: 7:29 pm EST November 6, 2008

Hours after they took him into custody, Steubenville police are again looking for a man suspected of stealing from a gas station.

Zachary George, 22, was arrested Wednesday night, but was released and told to appear in court Thursday morning. He did not appear, now detectives must search for him again.

George is charged with two counts of petty theft. Because the Jefferson County Jail releases misdemeanor suspects, officials said this happens quite often.

Holzworth said in the past year, they have filed more than 1,200 misdemeanor charges and about 1,000 prisoners have gone free. Because of that, officers are often doing double the work on a single case.

"It's frustrating for me. I'm constantly chasing down people I already arrested when they should be in the jail, safely away from people," Holzworth said.

He said tracking George down a second time will be more difficult.

"I searched two days for him... crawling through burned-out buildings and searching all over the city," Holzworth said. "Now he knows there is a warrant out for him. We will find him, but I'm sure this time it's going to be a lot harder."

Officials with Steubenville Municipal Court said, as of last week, they have 159 failure to appear warrants.
