Victim’s Sister Testifies At 1987 Steubenville Murder Trial

Testimony continued Wednesday in the trial of a man accused of stabbing a Steubenville woman to death more than two decades ago.

Michael Harris, 53, is charged with aggravated murder and murder in connection with the 1987 stabbing death of 20-year-old Jill Howard. He previously pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Harris was arrested in connection with the crime days after Howard’s death in 1987, but prosecutors at that time felt there was not enough evidence to go to trial. Prosecutors have since said new DNA and physical evidence links Harris to the killing.

Jane Russell, the victim’s sister, testified Wednesday she believes Harris and Howard fought prior to the killing.

“(Howard) told me that she and Michael were fighting and that he had punched her in the eye. He had hit her on her body. She had bruises. She took off her nightgown and I saw the bruises,” Russell said.

The jury also heard disputes from the prosecution and defense about if blood found in Harris’ car was from an auto accident that happened prior to the killing.

Six witnesses are scheduled to testify Wednesday, and one is scheduled for Thursday before the case is presented to the jury.

Harris’ defense attorney said it was “doubtful” his client would testify.
