Former Coroner’s Investigator Pleads Guilty To Theft

Monday, November 17, 2008 – updated: 6:59 pm EST November 17, 2008

A former investigator with the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office pleaded guilty to felony theft charges Monday.

David Workman was charged with theft in office after police said he stole a credit card at the Jefferson County morgue and used it at a strip club in Weirton, W.Va.

Before a judge accepted a guilty plea, Workman said he accidentally stole the card while he was working in the morgue and used it at the strip club.

After the prosecutor said she felt Workman wasn’t admitting to the crime, Workman addressed the judge.

“I took the card and put it in my wallet – shirt -- and used it. They did ask if I had the authorization to use it and they said -- I don't remember saying it -- they said I said it was my brother-in-law. I said fine. Yes. I used it,” Workman said.

Sentencing will take place in December. At that time, the family of victim Joseph Verstraten will give impact statements.

Workman is also charged separately in West Virginia with fraudulent use of a credit card.

He was employed at the coroner’s office for seven years. The county coroner fired Workman in June when the theft allegations surfaced.
