He played football on both offense and defense.

He played football on both sides of the U.S.-Canada border.

He played football in Weirton both before and after schools were desegregated.

Bob Jeter died Thursday in Chicago, at age 71.

Jeter was born in Union, S. C., but later played football in Weirton's segregated Dunbar High School and would wrap his high school career at the newly-integrated Weir High School.

He played as a two-way back and held a Rose Bowl rushing record while playing for the University of Iowa.

Jeter played briefly in the Canadian Football League before playing 11 seasons as a defensive back in the NFL.

Eight of those seasons were with the Green Bay Packers, a stint that included a trip to Super Bowls I and II.

Jeter finished his NFL career with the Chicago Bears and remained in the city until his death Thursday.

Jeter's brother, Tony, played for the Pittsburgh Steelers, and his son, Rob, is the head basketball coach at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Jeter's portrait hangs on the Weir High School Wall of Fame in the school's Hamill Fieldhouse.

Weir High Principal Marty Hudek told NEWS9 he will make a special announcement Friday morning marking Jeter's passing.
