An Ohio County judge has declared a mistrial for a Bellaire man charged with kidnapping and malicious wounding.

A jury was expected to begin deliberations in the case of 20-year-old Nicholas Greathouse on Friday, but a judge ruled the state made an improper statement during its closing arguments.

Greathouse is accused of beating his girlfriend and holding her against her will last year.

A new trial is scheduled for Jan. 13.
