Wetzel County Hunter Dies Of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Posted: 12:10 pm EST November 24, 2008Updated: 7:10 pm EST November 24, 2008

Wetzel County deputies discovered a hunter dead from carbon monoxide poisoning early Monday morning.

Sheriff James Hoskins said it was a 38-year-old Texas man who died, and a 37-year-old Pennsylvania man who was found still alive.

The men were found in the Four Mile area of the county near Pine Grove.

Hoskins said the two men planned to hunt in the area Monday morning, but suffered carbon monoxide poisoning from heating lanterns in their poorly ventilated trailer.

Police said the 37-year-old Pennsylvania man was taken by medical helicopter to Allegheny General Hospital.

And Hoskins said the incident is similar to many other accidents his department has responded to before, and he hopes this time the community learns from the situation.

"People that use the type of heating involved need to make sure that there's adequate ventilation because it can happen quickly, and it's painful for the family members that are left to go through this," Hoskins said.

The accident is preventable, according to Hoskins.

"There are steps and measures that people can take to avoid something like this," Hoskins said.

The incident remains under investigation. Stay with NEWS9 and WTOV9.com for continuing coverage.
