Steubenville Big Red Falls In Ohio Division IV State Championship

Friday, November 28, 2008 – updated: 6:09 pm EST November 28, 2008

Steubenville Big Red football fans and parents flocked to Canton Friday to cheer on the team hoping to soon call them champions.

However, Big Red came up short in their quest for a third state title in four years, falling to Kettering Alter 21-6.

Big Red trailed 21-0 in the fourth quarter, but got on the board thanks to a Dwight Macon to Trey Wiggins touchdown pass. That would be Steubenville's only score of the contest.

Kettering Alter won its first ever football title by controlling the time of possession, keeping the ball 11 minutes more than Steubenville. Alter outgained Big Red in rushing yards 303-88.

Steubenville ends its season with a 14-1 record.

Hours before kickoff for the Ohio Division IV State Championship game, Steubenville Big Red fans everywhere were gearing up for their team to roll into another win.

“It’s tradition. …Everyone where I live in Illinois, they know about Big Red, Ohio football -- we always brag it up,” said David Pearce, a Steubenville High School fan who traveled 600 miles for the final game on the gridiron. “Wouldn’t miss it for anything,” he said.

With T-shirts, hats and sweatshirts, Steubenville supporters stood out at Faucet Stadium.

“We are huge football fans. My son in New Jersey has everyone wearing Big Red in New Jersey today,” said Jacky Hines.

For those who couldn’t make it to the game, it will be aired it its entirety after Sports Friday on WTOV9.
