STEUBENVILLE, Ohio -- Most taps in Steubenville were running again Tuesday night, but a little rough.A geyser blasted out of a water main beneath Sunset Boulevard on Monday after a plumbing company accidentally broke the 20-inch line, Steubenville Water Department officials said.A waterless Tuesday was tough for thousands of residents like Elizabeth Martin."It's been a little difficult. My kitchen is very messy because we can't do the dishes,” said Martin.City water crews worked all night Monday and all day Tuesday to finally fix the broken line. Once they did, service was pretty sporadic."We haven't been able to turn on any water. We get a little tiny stream coming from our sink but other than that, nothing," said Martin. Many residents resorted to bottled water – which quickly flew off store shelves. The water was running Tuesday night but was discolored. The water department said it is safe to bathe in but must be boiled before drinking.Officials issued a boil order until 7:30 a.m. for customers from the Bob Evans restaurant in Brady Estates to the West End corporation limit, including the following areas:County Road 26
County Road 28
County Road 30
County Road 65 (Sunshine Park)
Jefferson
Montwell
Comet
Spruce
Queensboro
Penco
Pembrooke
Tony Pasquarella, of the Steubenville Health Department, said businesses can stay open if water is boiled. He said ice, coffee and soda machines must be turned off because water going through the machines would not be safe.Spokespeople for Bob Evans and Subway said they are taking those precautions and staying open, as are several fast food restaurants.Tim Horton’s, Ponderosa, and the Hong Kong Restaurant were closed as of noon. The break also forced Jefferson County Community College to cancel all day and evening classes.Stay with NEWS9 and WTOV9.com for continuing coverage.
