The Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston has laid off 17 employees, three of whom worked in the local area.

Diocese spokesman Bryan Minor said the cuts affect a secretary and two administrative workers at the Wheeling officer.

Minor said the cutbacks are a result of an operations audit. He said it is tough to say goodbye to those who had become friends as well as colleagues.
