WHEELING, W.Va. -- Just days after NEWS9 aired a story about BMX riders causing damage to Wheeling’s skate park the station has received comments from people around the country. E-mails have been pouring in from people who said BMX bikes don’t damage skate parks.Skatepark Association representative Heidi Lemmon also contacted the station from California to speak about the damage to the coping, or edging at the park."It could be a bad batch of concrete, it also can be the [concrete] work... And then of course if it isn't cured properly, you can have problems with it coming up," she said. But the city stands by the work, saying the company that built the park, Grindline, used concrete from a local company and simply didn't design the park for BMX use.City officials and Wheeling resident Diana Mey, who worked to raise funds for the park, said it’s not just about damage; keeping BMX bikes out is also a safety issue. They said the weight and construction of bikes make them more dangerous than skateboards.Lemmon said the bottom line is that the park should be a place where all kids can have fun."It's really a beautiful thing, you know? It's not by race, it's not by sex, it's not by what you’re riding, it's just all these kids getting along and respecting each other's skills," she said.NEWS9 put a call into Grindline’s office in Seattle, but a message there said the company is experiencing phone problems. Mey said she’s sending pictures of the damage to Grindline to get their opinion on what may have caused it.
