Security flaws have been discovered in Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Reader software.

Security researchers discovered PDF documents that were being used to compromise people's computers.

If you open a corrupted PDF document using Adobe Reader, identity thieves could control your computer.

Adobe won't be releasing a fix for the problem until March 11.

Until then, everyone running Adobe Reader 9 and earlier versions, and Adobe Acrobat Standard, Pro, Pro Extended 9, and earlier versions are at risk.

Until a fix is released, here are a few steps users should take.

1. Disable Javascript in Adobe. Just Click: Edit -> Preferences -> JavaScript and uncheck Enable Acrobat JavaScript.

2. Prevent Internet Explorer, or whatever browser you use, from automatically displaying PDF documents. In Explorer go to Edit->Preferences->Internet and uncheck "Display PDF in browser." This will give you a chance to close a potentially dangerous PDF document before it opens.

3. Be very suspicious of PDF documents. You wouldn't run an executable program that came from an unknown source in an email, so you shouldn't open a PDF document form an unknown source either.
