Health inspectors in Wheeling said they have visited three downtown apartment buildings to tackle a growing bedbug problem. In addition to Windsor Manor, inspectors have also been to Montani Towers and Booker T. Washington Apartments.NEWS9 first reported on the Windsor Manor bedbug issue last week. Since then, officials with the Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department received calls from more people concerned they too might have a problem. The problem is under control at all three complexes, but health officials said that doesn't mean the bugs can't spread."This is something we don't need to fear but we do need to be concerned," said Chuck Fisher, sanitarian. He said some apartments have been being treated for as long as six months.Bedbugs at Windsor Manor spread from unit to unit because some are connected by plumbing and other utilities. Maintenance workers at Montani Towers said the building's construction makes their situation less severe.Roy Jenkins, who works for Montani's maintenance department, said there are concrete walls between each unit and the building has concrete floors and ceilings.Management at Booker T. and Montani said, just like at Windsor, they act on a bedbug complaint the day they get it and each said they have the problem under control.Even though several cases have arisen downtown, Fisher said he believes this is still a unique problem. He said even a visitor or friends getting together may be spreading the bug."I think there seems to be a risk with going from an individual to an individual," he said.Health inspectors said people should try to avoid buying used furniture or getting it from other people.Workers at the three affected apartment buildings also said they are making sure to destroy or seal up any furniture residents get rid of.
