Power Pole Malfunction Causes 2-Acre Brush Fire

More than 2 acres of land is charred after what crews called one of the worst brush fires they've ever seen.

The brush fire in Ohio County threatened homes and animals. Officials said the fire originated at a power pole.

An equipment malfunction caused the top of a power pole to catch fire, sparking the blaze, American Electric Power officials said.

No one was injured and the fire did not spread to any homes. Firefighters attributed that to fast-acting residents.

Residents along Clearview Avenue like Joe Olejasz rushed outside as soon as her heard the news.

"My son called. He said, 'Get some shovels and rakes and get outside. We've got a fire,'" Olejasz said.

He said he doesn't know how long they worked before fire crews arrived and his focus was on the neighborhood's safety.

"You don't tell time when you've got an emergency, when you think your house might be next," Olejasz said.

Clearview Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Andrew Huggins said it was the biggest brush fire he's seen during his career.

"Most of the time we can get them before they get this big. We have enough manpower where we can get around the entire area, but this was so wide," Huggins said.

Power was shut off to about 200 people in the Clearview area while crews repaired the pole. An AEP representative said power is expected to be restored by 5:30 p.m.
