Local Assistant Fire Chief Dies In Crash

Bergholz Assistant Fire Chief Terry Workman Sr. was killed after suffering a heart attack while driving his truck along Route 22 Wednesday morning.

Workman was a member of the Bergholz Fire Department for over three decades, and NEWS9 talked with firefighters as they remembered their friend, mentor and assistant fire chief.

"He was an outstanding person -- one you could always count on,” said Bergholz Fire Chief John Marsh. “Anytime the department has ever needed something, he was always the first to say, ‘Yes, I'll do that.’"

Marsh said he could have talked about Workman all night. He said there have been many memories, perhaps too many to count.

"Every day was a memorable experience with him. Anybody that worked with him or spent time here with him during any call we ever had was a memorable experience. He was just a wonderful person to be around."

After a truck veered off Route 22 near the Jefferson County-Harrison County border Wednesday morning, one of the Hopedale firefighters at the scene recognized the driver as Workman.

Workman went into cardiac arrest behind the wheel, according to Ohio State Highway Patrol.

After joining the staff in 1975, Workman held almost every position at the Bergholz Fire Department over the years. His real specialty seemed to be as an engineer.

"He knew everything on all the trucks,” said Don Rowe, fellow firefighter and longtime neighbor. “He had been trained on all the trucks. If anybody had a problem, they could ask him and he could usually help them out."

In 2002, Workman was named Firefighter of the Year. That same month, he became assistant fire chief. An avid hunter and a father of three sons and two stepchildren, no one will forget the lessons they learned from him.

"He made everybody better as a firefighter,” said Marsh. “He never overlooked anything or walked away from anything."

"He was a good friend, he really was,” said Rowe. “He had a good family and I know he'll be sadly missed."

Marsh said that Workman will receive a full firefighter's funeral next week, including lines of trucks and EMS vehicles from all across the tri-state area. Already, five local fire departments volunteered to cover the Bergholz post that day, so that all of Workman's former crew members can attend.
