Man Who Died While Stuck In Mud Suffered From Alzheimer's

An elderly man who died after his car became stuck in mud suffered from Alzheimer's and should not have been driving, police said.

Angel Valdez, 82, died after the car he and his wife were in veered off the road and became stuck in mud at a ball field in Bellaire.

Police said both Valdez and his wife suffered from Alzheimer's disease and should not have been driving alone. Further, the couple was stopped by police two times prior to the crash because of the way they were driving.

The couple left Bridgeport, W.Va., around 9 a.m. Friday. They were stopped for driving too slow around 1 a.m. Saturday on state Route 7 near Sardis, in Monroe County, Ohio.

They continued to Shadyside, where another officer stopped them around 2 a.m. Saturday, again because of their driving. They continued on, and ultimately veered onto the Bellaire ball fields at 26th Street.

Officers said the couple's family members sensed something was wrong. The contacted West Virginia State Police, who issued a message to local authorities to look for the pair.

"It’s unfortunate, them having the medical conditions, that they were traveling that great a distance," Bellaire Police Chief Mike Kovalyk said.

Kovalyk said he hopes the story touches local elderly people or families with older loved ones driving who maybe shouldn't be.

"Have them retested to see if they are capable of operating a motor vehicle in a safe condition," he said.

The couple was traveling to Kent, Ohio, to visit family. Police said the wife was found alive in the car and told them her husband went to look for help.

Valdez was found several hours later, around 10 a.m. Saturday, lying in mud and water. He was taken to Ohio Valley Medical Center where he later died due to medical reasons stemming from being outside in the mud, police said.
