Swine Flu Kills Dozens In Mexico, Spreads Into United States

A new strain of flu dubbed the swine flu has hit the United States Saturday after killing dozens in Mexico.

NEWS9 talked to an Ohio Valley doctor who said the flu has not yet spread to any Valley states, and people should not be too concerned.

Meanwhile, in other states across the country, the list of people testing positive for the virus is growing.

Kansas, Massachusetts, Minnesota and New York all have confirmed or suspected cases, along with Texas and California.

The Centers for Disease Control said the virus spreads like other flu viruses, through contact and coughing and sneezing.

The swine flu has ravaged Mexico with at least 60 people reported dead from the illness, and more than one thousand sick.

Dr. Jennifer Adkins with East Ohio Regional Hospital in Martins Ferry said the cases reported in the United States so far have not been as traumatic as those in Mexico.

None of the US cases have proved fatal, according to officials.

"Everyone who contracted the virus in the US has actually recovered and done well," Adkins said.

Adkins said that if anyone in the Valley feels as if they have any flu-like symptoms, they should contact a local doctor.
