MOUNDSVILLE, W. Va. -- Police and corrections officers from around the world are training in Moundsville this week with technology and tactics they hope will keep them even in the arms race against criminals. The 13th Annual Mock Prison Riot began Sunday morning at the former state penitentiary.Part trade show and part training camp, the event will allow officers to test out new technology and tactics in simulated riots with actors portraying inmates."This is pretty intense training," said Capt. Paul Simmons of the West Virginia Department of Corrections. "The more realistic, the more prepared you are for something you might encounter."The recent shooting deaths of three Pittsburgh police officers by a man suspected of using an AK-47 and wearing a bullet-proof vest has added urgency to an event that aims to protect officers in the line of danger.Collins White, whose company makes riot gear, told NEWS9 real-world situations and the simulations conducted at the mock riot guide the development of new products."(We're) applying that to ballistics products that are lighter, more tactical and easier to use and deploy for these guys so when there's a situation like Pittsburgh, they're able to respond with the right equipment," said White. The event is getting more international exposure in its 13th year.Teams from Israel, Ireland and the Bahamas were among those registering Sunday morning."For us, it's the ability to use and see what the exhibitors have to offer for corrections and law enforcement as a whole," said Alfred Rolle, who is leading a contingent of officers from Her Majesty's Prison in the Bahamas. She plans on sharing what she's learned with colleagues in other Carribbean nations in hopes they'll join her next year. The Mock Prison Riot continues through May 6.
