Unofficial Results Show Local School Levy Passing

Unofficial results in late Tuesday night show that the school levy for the Switzerland of Ohio School District passed.

The levy is set to bring in about $87 million worth of new school buildings and renovations to the district that spans Belmont, Noble and Monroe Counties. About 60 percent of the cost will be covered by the state of Ohio, according to school leaders.

Six new school buildings are set to be built in the district. River High School, Powhatan Elementary, and Monroe Central High School are among the schools that will be rebuilt. Beallsville, Skyvue, and Woodsfield will also get new elementary buildings for grades kindergarten through eight. And Hannibal and Sardis are set to be combined in a new elementary building as well.

Local supporters of the project told NEWS9 that they felt the levy passed because it offers improvements for so many different schools.

"The pieces are all relatively equal and that wasn't true in the past ... this is a much better plan than previous plans," Jason Yoss said.

Superintendent Larry Elliott said he feels that the levy will mean good things for the students and the community.

"We are considered one of the worst districts in the state as far as facilities, and now is our time to get current and competitive with the rest of the state," Elliott said.
