Police: Man Disrupts Campus, Assaults Officer

A Cleveland man is in the Belmont County jail after troopers said he showed up at a local college campus in torn pajamas asking to enroll in classes Thursday. Shortly after he was told to leave the campus, investigators said he assaulted a sergeant from the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Blood ran down 20-year-old Jeremy Lease's face in his mug shot after one wild day, according to investigators.

Ohio State Highway Patrol said Lease showed up at the campus of Ohio University Eastern wearing nothing but some torn-up pajama shorts, saying he wanted to enroll.

Administrators quickly called state patrol.

"They stated that he had been making comments. They were concerned for his safety and the safety of the students at OUE," said Sgt. James Tracy.

In less than five minutes, Tracy spotted Lease on Route 40. He stopped Lease and they talked. Despite his appearance, Tracy said everything seemed fine.

"Once I asked him to have a seat in the cruiser he actually sat down, stood back up, and then immediately, I was talking to a different person. I could see it in his eyes," said Tracy.

Lease started to resist, according to Tracy. He tried restraining him, but couldn't. Lease wasn't even fazed by a jolt from a Taser, said Tracy, and he started making disturbing comments.

"[He said he] wanted to find Jesus. He was apologizing for fighting me but it was his duty to fight me because he didn't want to go to hell," said Tracy. "I didn't want to hurt this gentleman, obviously because of the comments he was making -- obviously, I felt threatened because he was fighting with me but I knew that there was enough help on the way."

Tracy had to call for back up. He said it took two full grown men to gain control of Lease -- who weighs 160 pounds.

On the way to jail, Tracy said Lease did eventually calm down, but kept insisting he was being taken to the gates of hell.

"This is why we're out here because it should be me fighting with this person and not a student or administrator at OUE," said Tracy.

Lease is charged tonight with felonious assault on an officer, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

The Belmont County prosecutor is expected to review the case and could file additional charges.
