Wheeling's Bed Bug Problem Slowing, But Far From Over

Months after bed bugs infested several Wheeling high-rises, health officials said the problem is slowing down but is far from eradication.

Sanitarian Chuck Fisher said the problem is under control, but keeping it that way won't be easy. He said it's a very good possibility the bugs could make a resurgence if the buildings' owners let up on treatments.

"I'm worried," Fisher said. "I worry about taking them home with me. I don't want them."

He said the bugs are also excellent at hiding in places pesticides may not reach.

"The bed bugs have a tendency to climb the walls, move across the ceilings and drop on you," he said.

He also said there's the possibility the bugs could be carried out of downtown and spread into the city.

"I worry and I'm concerned about some of the people if they have bed bugs that have not been eradicated. And (if) they're moving to get away from the bed bugs, they're just taking them with them."

Fisher has checked back with the places that had problems and hasn’t found any new infestations, but he said the bugs also have a tendency to build resistance to pesticides very effectively.

"We're working towards slowing it down to the point that it's manageable. But we'll never get rid of them," Fisher said.
