Local Leaders Visualize Future Of Weirton

Local leaders sketched ideas of business, entertainment and transportation plans for the Ohio Valley.

From using old structures to redeveloping Brownfield sites to the riverfront, leaders have a vision for it all.

"These are quality of life issues. That’s what people at the end are striking for," said Dr. Brown of the Brooke Hancock Jefferson Metropolitan Planning Commission.

That includes an intermodal center at Weirton's old rail yard.

"Moving freight is increasingly an issue for river and rail and this combines the two. It's something that has been talked about in the last year or so," said Brown.

Leaders also envisioned turning the old Cove school in Weirton into a new farmers' market. Weirton Works is one of their ideas that includes using the Hot End plant for a symphony, restaurant a museum.

Leaders want visitors to know they're in Weirton here they can eat, work and shop. That's why they want to create a gateway into the Three Springs area.

The visions look great on paper and Brown said they hope to turn these ideas into real possibilities.

"Is there funding to make these projects real? No. But you have to have a vision," said Brown.

The funding for the sketches comes from a Brownfield grant.

Brown said he plans to take the sketches back to local leaders and determine which visions they may aggressively pursue.

He said having those pictures to show investors may help officials acquire funding.
