Martins Ferry Police Chief Under Investigation, Says He's Innocent

A whirlwind of trouble seems to have followed ever since word broke that actress Sarah Jessica Parker's surrogate mother was living in Martins Ferry.

Now, the city's police chief is under investigation in a case involving the surrogate, but he told NEWS9 he’s innocent.

"I'm 100 percent innocent in this and my department is as well," said Chief Barry Carpenter.

Tuesday, Carpenter responded to allegations he broke the law in a situation involving Parker's surrogate mother.

"I really don't want to play this out in the media. That's what the investigating body B.C.I. & I. has been brought in for, to dispel any rumors, and they're doing a very thorough investigation," said Carpenter.

Carpenter said he and his department are cooperating 100 percent with investigators.

Since word broke the high-profile celebrity's surrogate was living in Martins Ferry, Carpenter said he prepared for trouble, but didn't expect this.

"I didn't foresee exactly what was to come, but nevertheless when something like this happens you can expect some kind of turmoil to follow it and it did. But we'll continue working with B.C.I. and hopefully everything will get taken care of," said Carpenter.

Carpenter claimed he's falsely accused in the case. He didn't elaborate on the accusations, but said the situation will impact the way he does his job from here on out.

"In the long run I'll make sure in my job no one will ever be falsely accused again because its not a good feeling. I can honestly say that," said Carpenter.

Carpenter is still on the job as chief in the city during the investigation.

Harrison County Prosecutor Shawn Hervey has been called in to handle the case.
