Local Celebrity Surrogate Case Generates Tabloid Buzz

Tabloid media from across the country have been calling the NEWS9 newsroom wanting to know details about a case involving a surrogate mother for Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick.

NEWS9 has been trying for two weeks to obtain documents about allegations against Martins Ferry Police Chief Barry Carpenter, but the documents have not been made public.

Wednesday, Carpenter confirmed to NEWS9 he is under investigation and said he is facing allegations that he said are simply untrue.

Carpenter did not elaborate on the allegations against him, but said both he and his department are innocent of any wrongdoing when it comes to the surrogate mother. The chief said he expects a Bureau Criminal Identification and Investigation to prove that.

Harrison County Prosecutor Shawn Hervey, who is a special prosecutor assigned to the case, said he could not release any information as of Wednesday afternoon.

Carpenter remains on the job while the investigation continues.

Stay with NEWS9 and WTOV9.com for continuing coverage as details become available.
