Belmont County Lays Off 13 Sheriff's Employees, Jail Administrator

More than a dozen layoff notices went out Monday to employees at the Belmont County Sheriff's Office in another attempt to try to meet budget demands.

Among the deputies let go was the jail's administrator and NEWS9 has learned the dispatchers are the next to go.

Sheriff Fred Thompson lost his right-hand man, his chief deputy, in the first round of layoffs. Now, he said he had to let go of jail administrator Allen Porter -- meaning Thompson is the only administrator left.

"It's only right that management takes a hit also," said Thompson.

Thirteen additional layoff notices went out Monday, bringing the total to 30 employees cut from the office during this budget crisis.

With the jail administrator out, the sheriff said he plans to have a hand overseeing the jail.

"I have a captain here, who will do double duty. I'll be over there. I have a sergeant [who is] familiar with the day-to-day operations. Between the three of us, we'll manage," said Thompson.

The cuts don't stop there. The sheriff said come July 1, his four dispatchers will be gone too. County 911 dispatchers will take on the responsibility.

"The only problem is our dispatchers had more duties than just answering the phone and talking on the radio," said Thompson.

Entering and keeping track of warrants and leads and handling missing persons information are all duties Thompson said the 911 dispatchers can't handle because they’re not part of a law enforcement agency.

As for who will do it, Thompson said, at this point he's not sure.

Thompson applied for several grants through the stimulus package. If those grants come through, he expects to bring a majority of the laid-off workers back.

However, the chief deputy and jail administrator positions are not positions he's looking to bring back.
