Consol Mine Worker Crushed To Death In Pennsylvania

An investigation is under way into a fatal mining accident at a Consol mine in Greene County, Pa.

Consol Energy officials said 54-year-old Robert Maust of Uniontown died early Wednesday morning after being struck by falling rocks.

Consol spokesman Joseph Cerenzia said the accident happened around 11 p.m. Tuesday at the Bailey Mine in Wind Ridge, about 50 miles southwest of Pittsburgh.

Cerenzia said Maust was struck in the torso. Fellow miners attended to him immediately and performed CPR while taking him out of the mine. Maust was airlifted from the scene and pronounced dead at 12:17 a.m. No other miners were injured.

State and federal mining officials are investigating the incident.

Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection spokesman Tom Rathbun said the mine will be idled while the DEP and other officials investigate the accident.
