Deputies Patrol Party Hot Spot

In Marshall County, deputies will spend the holiday weekend heavily patrolling a party hot spot where they said they've had a number of problems with all terrain vehicles and alcohol.

Deputies expect the activity to pick up again this weekend in the Viola area of the county.

"When people get out here they get a little bit crazy," said Sgt. Rick Mercer.

Mercer said no one from his office gets vacation this weekend so deputies can be out on patrols.

“Mainly on holiday weekends, we run into a lot of four-wheelers on weekends and DUI's," Mercer said.

He said deputies have tried to pull over ATV riders who are breaking laws, but it's easy for the riders to cut up a steep trail and disappear from sight. He said the biggest problem in the area is alcohol consumption. He's seen firsthand just how dangerous it can get.

"It was a couple months ago I had a car go right off right the road right here down over the hill. And it's about 50 or 60 feet down. That was a DUI," he said.

Marshall County Sheriff John Gruzinskas said he's gone outside the department for help, to the state police and the Division of Highways to see if there’s any way they may be able to help curb the problems in the Viola area.
