Fourth Of July Celebration Also A Farewell

Posted: 4:31 pm EDT July 3, 2009Updated: 7:14 pm EDT July 3, 2009

This year's fireworks display will be the last from the Fort Steuben Bridge.

Leaders from Steubenville and Weirton have worked together to provide the fireworks to citizens for the past five years.

However, this fall the Ohio Department of Transportation plans to demolish the structure.

Because the bridge is closed to traffic, Steubenville had to get special permission from the ODOT. The approval includes restrictions.

"We are not allowed to bring trucks or trailers onto the bridge to unload the fireworks," said Steubenville Mayor Domenick Mucci. "So we'll be using an all terrain vehicle and hand carrying a lot of the fireworks displays."

Like year's past, Saturday's fireworks will be accompanied by music and Mucci hopes for a big turnout.

Some residents said they're sad they may not be watching the show from the water next year.

Sara DiCarlantonio of Steubenville said, "It's sad it really is. They do a beautiful job. It's really nice."

Mucci said both Steubenville and Weirton pay $9,000 for the fireworks display.

He said even if Steubenville has to pay the entire cost next year, there will be fireworks; however, a location hasn't been chosen.

The city is considering using barges on the river, Belleview Park or the Fort Steuben Amphitheater.
