OHIO COUNTY, W.Va. -- Mosquitoes aren’t just pesky, the Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department said some mosquitoes in the county tested positive for the West Nile Virus."The tests just began. It resulted in two positive findings for mosquitoes with West Nile," said Health Department Administrator Howard Gamble.Gamble said West Nile generally affects animals, but can also be transferred to humans through bites from mosquitoes carrying the disease. Earlier this month, health department employees made a mix of grass, manure, water and other ingredients. The mix was distributed into traps set up throughout the county to attract mosquitoes for testing. It took only a few days for the health department to send away the trapped mosquitoes and get results back from the state."I suspected that probably West Nile has been here and we just haven't been looking for it," said Mike Makowski with the health department.Gamble said it’s important to know how to protect yourself. That includes eliminating standing water, wearing bug repellent, long sleeves and pants. The health department will continue testing to determine whether West Nile is a threat throughout the county.
