Foreigners With HIV/AIDS May Soon Be Allowed To Enter U.S.

Posted: 2:48 pm EDT July 17, 2009

Foreigners who have HIV could soon be allowed to travel and immigrate to the United States under a new plan by federal health officials.

The plan would remove HIV from the list of diseases that can bar entry to the country.

AIDS advocates are cheering for the plan that was enacted when people and politicians wrongly feared the disease could be contracted through casual contact.

But immigration critics contend it could allow more than 4,000 infected people into the country annually, increasing medical costs by millions.

The CDC is asking for public comment on the issue through mid-August.
