Grand Jury Reviews Celebrity Surrogate Case

A grand jury met Wednesday to get the results of an investigation surrounding a local police chief and the surrogate mother for actress Sarah Jessica Parker's children.

Harrison County prosecutor Shawn Hervey was previously appointed special prosecutor in the case. The grand jury was scheduled to meet at 1 p.m., presumably to review the prosecutor's findings.

The investigation centers on Martins Ferry Police Chief Barry Carpenter and a local woman who was the surrogate mother of Parker and Matthew Broderick's twin daughters.

The surrogate lived in Martins Ferry and gave birth to the twins at East Ohio Regional Hospital.

Carpenter previously confirmed he was under investigation and remains on the job. Hervey would not say if anyone else was under investigation.

Hervey previously told NEWS9 if any charges come as a result of that investigation, those charges would come from the grand jury.

Officials for the Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Hervey were at the courthouse and the grand jury was still meeting behind closed doors as of 3 p.m.

Representatives from Hervey's office said they would likely issue a news release on Friday. If anyone is indicted, that will be made public only after the person is served.
