Bad news is spreading through the Buckeye Local School District.Because voters didn't pass a school levy last week, district officials are left with tough decisions and they announced drastic plans for the future. Those decisions come in a three-year, five-phase plan of consolidation, closures and cuts. The plans will reduce the district to one high school and three elementary schools by 2013.The board approved phase one tonight.Starting June 2010, Buckeye North Middle School will close and students will attend Buckeye Southwest.West Elementary school will close. Its students will be taught at Buckeye North.Starting in September of 2009, the district plans to cut one clerk, two custodians, one educational aide and reduce hours for 13 full-time head and assistant cooks.High School Head Cook Shirley Jarvis said, "With the steel mills and everything going on around us, people are hurting."Jarvis was the only person who would talk to NEWS9 cameras.Mostly everyone left the meeting silent and stunned."I do expect people to be upset," said Superintendant Mark Miller. "I do expect people to be shocked."Miller said the board has no intention of putting the school levy back on the ballot in November.Their deadline is Aug. 20 but the next board meeting isn't scheduled until September.
