College Prepares For Health Care Town Hall

Posted: 5:55 pm EDT August 12, 2009

Some town hall meetings are getting heated, as people get a chance to weigh in on the president's proposed health care reform. Wheeling Jesuit University is bumping up security for a town hall meeting with Rep. Alan Mollohan at the Troy Theater this Friday.

"We don't want this to be a police thing here. We want people to feel comfortable. So we're going to have a law enforcement presence, just maybe not in this room," said Steve Habursky, campus security director.

People in the area said they're grateful for the chance to have Mollohan listen when it comes to health care issues.

"The only thing I would ask of him is him to consider you know, us little people in the situation that we're in right now," said Charlene Violet.

Violet and fellow West Virginia Business College student Ashley Schreiner said they want a solution to health care problems reached in a civil way, but they can understand why some people are getting so fired up.

"They tell us that…they're trying to reform everything, and make health care better but in all reality every year it's getting worse," Schreiner said.

Local gas and service station owner Rob Schmidt said he won’t be able to attend Friday’s town hall, because he’ll be managing his business, Schmidt Bros. Sunoco in Wheeling, but he has some strong opinions on the issue. He's tried to provide medical benefits for his employees, but says keeping up with costs is nearly impossible.

"I’ve had to get away from that because I’ve got employees that are older that have health issues. If I put them in the group, it goes through the roof,” Schmidt said.

The Troy Theater will seat 350 people on a first come first serve basis. The town hall starts at 6 p.m. Habursky said Mollohan wants the meeting to continue until the discussion is complete.
