Pre-Trial Hearing Held For Trio Accused In Celebrity Surrogate Scandal

A pre-trial hearing was held Thursday for two police chiefs and a mayor's son charged in connection with a celebrity surrogate scandal.

Martins Ferry Police Chief Barry Carpenter, Bridgeport Police Chief Chad Dojack and local businessman Bruce Callarik are charged in connection with a theft at the home the surrogate mother of actress Sara Jessica Parker and actor Matthew Broderick's twin daughters.

Police said the men conspired to sell items to a tabloid photographer from the surrogate's Martins Ferry home.

Carpenter is suspended and faces felony charges. He is accused of trying to sell items stolen from the surrogate's home.

Dojack stepped aside as chief while he deals with the charges. He is accused of conspiring to break into the home in order to take items that could be sold to tabloid publications.

Callarik, is facing the least severe charge: one count of receiving stolen property.

The court proceedings on Thursday took just a 1/2 hour. The defense and prosecution agreed they were satisfied with the information they provided to each other. No new motions were filed and the three men accused left the courthouse without making any comments.

A motion hearing is set for Oct. 2 and all three men are scheduled for trial this fall.

Judge John Solovan is handling the case. Stay with NEWS9 and WTOV9.com for continuing coverage.
