Trials Set For Police Chiefs Charged In Celebrity Surrogate Scandal

Trial dates have been set for two local police chiefs charged in connection with a celebrity surrogate scandal.

Martins Ferry Police Chief Barry Carpenter and Bridgeport Police Chief Chad Dojack appeared in a Belmont County court Friday for a status hearing. Carpenter's trial was set for Nov. 16 and Dojack's trial was set for Jan. 12.

Police said the men conspired to sell items to a tabloid photographer from a woman's Martins Ferry home. At the time, the woman was the surrogate mother for actress Sarah Jessica Parker and actor Matthew Broderick's twin daughters.

Carpenter is suspended and faces felony charges. He is accused of trying to sell items stolen from the surrogate's home.

Dojack stepped aside as chief while he deals with the charges. He is accused of conspiring to break into the home in order to take items that could be sold to tabloid publications.

Local businessman Bruce Callarik is also charged in connection with the alleged theft. Callarik, who is the Bridgeport mayor's son and Dojack's father-in-law, is facing the least severe charge: one count of receiving stolen property.

During the hearing, Dennis McNamara was also established as Carpenter's new attorney.

Judge John Solovan is presiding over the case and Special Prosecutor Shawn Hervey said more evidence in the case is forthcoming. Neither Carpenter nor Dojack had much to say during or after the proceedings.
