Jury Deliberates If Yarbrough Should Live Or Die

Ten years after two Franciscan University students were kidnapped and murdered, a jury heard testimony to determine if their killer will live or die.

On Tuesday, a Washington County, Pa., jury found Terrell Yarbrough guilty of the 1999 murders of Aaron Land and Brian Muha.

Wednesday, the penalty phase of the trial began and the same 12-person jury that convicted Yarbrough of first-degree murder heard more testimony and statements from the victims' families. The jury will ultimately decide if Yarbrough will spend life in prison or be sentenced to death.

Kathleen O'Hara, Land's mother, said the trial was very painful but she welcomed the opportunity to give her victim impact statement.

"We get to say what the victims, our loved ones, were like," O'Hara said. It gives a human face to the person … letting the jury know this was a real person whose life was taken."

Chris Muha, the older brother of Brian Muha, shared fond memories that he and his family hold onto. He said he wanted the jury to know the kindness and loving spirit of his murdered brother.

"He was so generous with his time and his talents and some of the things he loved most. That's how we want Brian to be remembered," he said.

Despite the loss of his brother, Chris Muha insists he and his family don't want to see Yarbrough put to death.

"We want to honor Brian, but we don't want anyone killed because of Brian or for Brian's sake or for our sake," he said.

Members of both Land and Muha's families said they are trusting the jury to decide Yarbrough's punishment.
